Reducing Litter in the West Valley
To reduce the amount of litter in the West Valley, Blumenfield launched an initiative to help property owners have more tools to remind people about the
need to keep neighborhoods clean and the penalties for violating littering and illegal dumping laws. Blumenfield will supply free and approved signs that say “Keep LA Clean, Please Don’t Litter” to comply with the law requiring proper posting. To receive a sign please call (818) 774-4330. Restricting Illegal Dumping
A vital component of maintaining clean streets is making sure that people who illegally use our streets, sidewalks and alleys as dumping grounds are identified. If you see illegal dumping or have information that can lead to the identification of an illegal dumping law violator please submit a report via MyLA311. In recent years, Blumenfield led several initiatives to increase penalties for illegal dumping and enhance the City’s resources for cleaning the streets. In 2019,
the Council passed an ordinance raising fines on violators prosecuted for illegal dumping to $250 for the first offense, $500 for the second and for three-time and subsequent offenders, $1,000, along with possible misdemeanor citation or six months in jail. In 2019, the Council directed LA Sanitation to report on the reinstatement of an illegal dumping reward program. In 2019, the Council directed LA Sanitation to report on ways to crack down on illegal dumping at apartments. In 2020, the Council passed Blumenfield's motion to use up to $2.95M of the State’s Homeless, Housing Assistance, and Prevention program to establish a Loose Litter Program that connects homeless folks with employment and job training for picking up trash.
