BUILDING THE WORLD'S LARGEST COOL PAVEMENT PROGRAM

Posted on 08/10/2023

Councilmember Blumenfield photographed pre-pandemic with StreetsLA team at the Cool Pavement site on Stephanie St in Winnetka.

With the help of Climate Reality, Councilmember Blumenfield has helped created the world's largest cool pavement project.  (He had previously hosted the first public street in the nation to use the cool pavement technology.) It is like putting sun screen on a street and the project is located in the West Valley on and around Stephanie St. Cool pavement technology, unlike asphalt, reflects the sun's rays rather than absorbing them into the ground. Academics from USC are currently studying the benefits of this new technology. The cooler temperature from the test zone is easily measured and can actually be seen from space. The blue and green tones in this satellite image demonstrate the success of the program.
