Existing Bike Path: Mason to Vanalden
- The LA River bike path currently extends from Mason Street in Winnetka to Vanalden Avenue in Reseda because Blumenfield helped push for its funding and construction. The path is a valuable community asset, and Councilmember Blumenfield has worked with community groups to address concerns about maintenance and safety, including by creating and funding a program to have MRCA Rangers patrol the River. Future Bike Path: Mason to Owensmouth
- In April 2021, the City broke ground on a $6 Million project to upgrade the existing path on the south side of the LA River between Mason and Owensmouth to an asphalt bike path with under crossings at DeSoto and Canoga. This will provide high-quality bicycle access to Canoga Park High School, Westfield Topanga Mall, and the rest of the Warner Center. Due to limits on work in the LA River channel during the wet season, River projects sometimes proceed more slowly than other construction.
- The project is expected to be completed by May 2023.
Future Bike Path: Vanalden to Balboa
- During FY21-22, the City plans to award a contract to extend the River Bikeway east from Vanalden Avenue to the Sepulveda Basin, including connections to other on-street bikeways in Reseda, Tarzana and Lake Balboa. When completed, there will be a continuous bikeway along the entire length of the LA River in the Councilmember Blumenfield’s district and beyond. Because the Sepulveda Basin will host events for the 2028 Olympic Games, this has become one of Metro’s “28 by ‘28” projects. Funding will come from Measure M transportation sales tax, a State Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant; Proposition K park tax, and other sources.
- Construction will take a few years, but will be completed by 2028.
WINNETKA AVENUE BIKE LANE EXTENSION
- In 2020, the Winnetka Avenue bike lanes were extended south from Vanowen Avenue to Oxnard Street, creating connections to the LA River Valley Bikeway, the Orange Line Winnetka Station and Bike Path, Pierce College, and the West Valley Occupational Center. In late 2021, a signalized crosswalk will be installed at Winnetka Avenue and Gilmore Street.
