In an ongoing effort to reduce Angelenos’ carbon footprint, the Council voted to make disposable utensils forks, spoons, lids, straws, napkins etc. available only on request. In order to stave off the use and production of unnecessary plastic, Councilmember Blumenfield introduced a motion in 2018 to cut plastic use by making plastic utensils by request only. Especially as Angelenos have enjoyed more take out meals than ever due to the pandemic, collecting countless packs of unneeded utensils, this citywide policy is both good for the environment and sensible for consumers.
